Glide Effortless - eDesktop Sharing

I enjoy everything multimedia, and the prospect of an eDesktop on which to share it, is pretty interesting.
Glide Effortless was released on the 30th of November, and offers to do just that, put your desktop content onto the web and allow you to share it with whoever you wish. Unlike many other sharing and P2P networks, this one does NOT require the recipient to download and install any program whatsover making sharing far far simpler. All they need is a web browser.

The site, unfortunately, is not well designed so I was a little distrustful, but I had linked there through some reviews from many online news sites and thought I’d try it out. My first try raised more suspicions as I was returned errors and couldn’t see the verification code. I returned later and was able to move further. You are able to choose a free accout with 1000MB of space but are required to enter your credit card. I was ready to leave when I tried typing in random numbers and was admitted… that’s when I knew the registration was completely messed up and decided to forget about it. Then they offer default anime pics which is weird too (like me, not everyone is into anime, so I thought that a strange default).
That is where I cancelled my registration and decided to give it a miss. I don’t think the site was secure enough to trust.

A comment on Slashdot (by Hrvat):

From TransMedia (Glide creator) Terms and Conditions:

Materials provided to TransMedia or Posted at any TransMedia Web Site

TransMedia does not claim ownership of the materials you provide to TransMedia (including feedback and suggestions) or post, upload, input or submit to any Services or its associated services for review by the general public, or by the members of any public or private community, (each a “Submission” and collectively “Submissions”). However, by posting, uploading, inputting, providing or submitting (”Posting”) your Submission you are granting TransMedia, its affiliated companies and necessary sublicensees permission to use your Submission in connection with the operation of their Internet businesses (including, without limitation, all TransMedia Services), including, without limitation, the license rights to: copy, distribute, transmit, publicly display, publicly perform, reproduce, edit, translate and reformat your Submission; to publish your name in connection with your Submission; and the right to sublicense such rights to any supplier of the Services….

What this basically means is that you’re giving them management rights to whatever you’re posting on their service. So if you’re a starving artist and you store your next hit song on their service, they have the right to copy, distribute, transmit etc. that song, or just sublicense it to someone else.

This is wrong. They are basically asking for you to give up all the rights without any compensation for it just by using the service. I definitively won’t be using this service.

If anyone has had any experience with them, do enlighten me.

  1. I am not sure about your comment on ePlatform. We are still in limited invitation only beta. ePlatform is quite different from “glide effortless?”.
